At the Echographic Laboratory of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecologic Clinic, University of Pavia, a diagnosis of ovarian malignancy has been made by ultrasound scan 72 times between April 1981 and June 1983. At surgery the diagnosis of ovarian malignancy was confirmed 57 times (79.1%), in 5 cases (6.9%) there was a metastatic tumor of the ovary, while in 10 patients (13.9%) laparotomy documented a benign ovarian mass. For ovarian malignancies, the echographic feature of the mass was solid in 47.4% of the cases, solid-cystic in 32.2%, cystic-solid in 10.2% and cystic in 10.2%. The ultrasound scan has had a role in presurgical staging by allowing the detection of ascites (37.2% of the cases), liver (16.9%) epiploic (8.4%) and umbilical (3.3%) metastases. The ultrasound examination has proven to be a useful diagnostic means for post-surgical follow-up.
