Abstract
S typhimurium lipopolysccharide conjugated with uranyl acetate in rat peritoneal macrophages was investigated by electron microscopy. The lipopolysaccharide was absorbed into the cell surface and engulfed by micropinocytosis; activation of cytoplasmic structures and the fusion of pinocytotic vacuoles with lysosomal granules having endotoxin degradation then ensued. These morphologic phenomena are discussed in relation to present knowledge on mechanisms of phagocyte function, macrophage activation and RES endotoxin interactions.
