Abstract

On the basis of data from microelectronic investigations, carried out on vegetative and cystic forms of Giardia lamblia and in the experimental murine infection by Giardia muris, a model of the ultrastructural organization of Giardia and of the functional role of its constituent organelles has been worked out. Having settled the relationships between trophozoites and the surface of the duodenal-jejunal mucous membrane, it was possible to perform a critical revision of the hypotheses, which had been formulated on the pathogenesis of the malabsorption in giardiasis, by detecting the essence of the intrinsic pathogenetic mechanisms of Giardia in the events of adhesion-micropinocytosis, carried out by the cytoskeletal-flagellar apparatus.
