Ultrastructure of gliosomes in ependymal cells of the lizard

Abstract

Gliosomes similar to those already described by other authors in amphibia and mammalia were found in the hypothalamic region of Lacerta s. sicula Raf. The internal matrix of these particular organelles, which closely resemble transformed mitochondria, is in a more or less advanced state of crystallization. The dimensions of the unit cell, the symmetry and the space group of these mitochondrial crystals were determined by analyzing electron micrographs of ultrathin sections of gliosomes by means of the optical transform technique. An evaluation of the molecular weight of the single asymmetrical subunit of the crystal lattice was obtained.
