Abstract
We investigated the effectiveness of uric acid (UA) level as a prognostic indicator in chronic heart failure. We found that high serum levels of UA are a strong independent marker of impaired prognosis in patients with moderate to severe heart failure, and that a stepwise, graded relationship exists between the serum UA level and survival in chronic heart failure. Assessment of the UA level provides prognostic information that is independent of well-established parameters, such as clinical status and exercise capacity.
