Abstract

We retrospectively reviewed the urodynamic studies of 37 infants with vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) to establish whether these young patients have bladder dysfunction (BD), with difference in gender, age at presentation and severity of reflux. Cystometries had been performed in 24 male and 13 female infants, aged 2 to 24 months, with II° to V° degree VUR. Of those, 10 underwent also natural filling cystometries. We considered detrusor overactivity (DO) when detrusor contractions of ≥50 cm H2O amplitude were present during bladder filling without micturition and maximal voiding detrusor pressure (VDP) as high when it exceeded 90 cm H2O. We defined hypercontractility as the presence of VDP >90 cm H2O and/or DO. Hypercontractility was found in 75% (18/24) of male and in 46% (6/13) of female infants (p
