Abstract

Background. Dupuytren's disease often produces a flexion deformity of finger joint hard to treat. In a high rate of cases surgical treatment may give only short-lasting results; in fact in the post-op surgical correction is often lost. A proper rehabilitation is necessary to keep and improve the results. The results obtained in 6 patients (males), aged 50-65, affected by Dupuytren's disease at 5th finger, with flexion deformity of PIP joint, are presented. Methods. These patients were treated by selective deformity aponeurectomy, followed by implant of the Compass Pip Joint Hinge in the post-op period. Pre-op joint flexion deformity was 71.6°on an average. Results. After surgery complete PIP joint extension was reached in all the patients. After a follow-up of 24 months the average flexion was 30.7°. All the patients followed the same rehabilitation protocol by using the Compass PIP Joint Hinge. Conclusions. The results at 24 months, compared with those found in international literature, state that the Compass PIP Joint Hinge is a very reliable device in rehabilitation and in maintaining the results obtained with surgery.
