Abstract
Capsule endoscopy is the most sensitive diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of small-bowel mucosal lesions. For this reason, over the past decade capsule endoscopy has acquired a central role in the diagnosis of suspected small-bowel Crohn’s disease as well as in the monitoring of patients with an established diagnosis. More recently, new devices with prolonged battery life and panoramicviewing have enabled the assessment of the entire gastrointestinal tract in one pan-enteric capsule endoscopy, thereby promoting clinical trials to identify alternative diagnostic strategies in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) field. Here we provide an overview of the latest advances in capsule endoscopy for IBD patients, focusing on the emerging paradigms and technological innovations that might improve clinical practice in the near future.
