Abstract
Seven patients (5 women and 2 men) with sarcoidosis in stage 1 were studied to evaluate the diagnostic yield of transbronchial biopsy. In each patient 3 biopsies through the fiberoptic bronchoscope were made in the lower left lobe. The mean duration of the disease at the time of investigations was 7 months. Transbronchial biopsy demonstrated the presence of non-caseating granulomas in 5 patients. In addition, in all the specimens there was a lymphomonocytic infiltrate. Our data confirmed the high sensitivity (70%) of transbronchial biopsy with regard to the diagnosis of sarcoidosis in stage 1. Moreover there were no complications in the patients examined. Our results substantiate the hypothesis that granulomatous lesions follow or are concomitant with an interstitial (aspecific) pneumonia.
