Abstract

VNS has been reported to decrease seizure frequency in patients with partial and generalized epilepsies unresponsive to antiepileptic drugs. Six patients (4M), aged 17-47, affected by medically intractable partial (5 cases) and generalized epilepsy (1 case) were implanted with a left vagus nerve stimulator (mod. 100 Cyberonics Inc., USA). Compared with pretreatment baseline was observed a 26.3-61% decrease in seizure frequency. Major events were tingling and hoarseness during stimulation. No surgical complications were observed in all patients.
